Hardy, perennial, tufted grass. Dense purple to golden inflorescences are produced from Aug. to Apr. after which the entire spikelet drops off. This widespread grass is drought resistant and grows particularly well in well-drained soils and along roadsides. It is a good grazing grass with a deep root system, which can endure trampling by grazing animals.
