Hardy, deciduous bulbous plant with very distinct and decorative pleated leaves that are arranged in flat, fan-like tufts and grow stiffly to almost 1m. The tubular rusty red flowers are more interesting than showy and are arranged on a graceful zig-zag spike, which stands above the leaves. They flower from Dec. to Feb. The plant commences growth in Oct and dies down in April. The flowers and foliage of this attractive garden plant can be used in flower arranging. Plant in full sun or semi-shade. It is used traditionally to treat dysentery and infertility
