Fairly hardy, semi-deciduous, upright, spiny tree with glossy dark green leaves which flush pink in spring. Fragrant white flowers with large yellow centres are borne in spring and summer and are followed by the round fruits which resemble small woody apples. Plant in well drained soil with lots of compost, mulch well and water throughout the year. If planted close together these shrubs make an excellent thorny barrier. It can also be planted in an informal shrub border or at the edge of a pond or stream.
