Hardy, evergreen or deciduous much branched, multi-stemmed shrub with spine-tipped branches.  The soft leaves have a bluish tinge and are strong smelling when crushed.  Tiny green flowers that are borne from Oct. to Dec. attract insects and are followed by decorative large, waxy white berries that attract Hornbills and other birds to the garden.  Male and female flowers on separate plants therefore only the female plants bear fruit.  Plant in sun or semi-shade.  Plant in a mixed hedge or in a bird garden   In its natural habitat it is said to be an indicator of underground water.  The supple, strong wood is used for fish traps and is also used medicinally.
