Very hardy, drought resistant, deciduous gnarled shrub or small tree, which grows at high altitude and develops rough dark bark.  It has attractive, glossy tri-foliate leaves that are pale green with a yellow midrib giving the shrub an almost lime green colour.  Unusually the leaves turn yellow and drop in summer. The inconspicuous small yellowish flowers are borne from March to Aug.  The thinly fleshy bunches of quite large seeds are sought after by birds.  As with all Rhus sp. male and female flowers are on separate plants therefore only the females bear fruit.
